Today's forecast predicted a window of wind early doors before/during a very rainy front passed over so with that in mind Martin and I sacrificed a day-off lie-in to make sure we arrived at Gwithian before 10am. But on arrival - not a breath. Very confusing had the wind already blown through? Arse. :(

Anyway the swell was still up so we grabbed the surfboards and made the most of it. And I had a really good session - just practising my pop-ups in the reform water on the inside, which I started to really get the hang of, and by the end I was standing up on the board for a reasonable length of time and getting some nice long rides. :)

After an hour or so of splashing around oh hello is that the wind picking up from a vaguely cross-shore direction? One sailor launched, floated out, and caught a long long wave back in...and that was that time to go windsurfing! With the help of Martin's self sacrifice as he headed back to work it wasn't long before the wind had really filled in and several fellow skivers were out on the water. So obviously the forecasted wind was arriving a few hours later than expected - better late than never!

Rigged the big kit to start with as it looked gusty but very quickly it became clear that this was far too much. However I wasn't too keen on making the trip back up the goat track to change down so I hung on and suffered until I got caught in the white water, several rinsings and BOLLOX finally back on the beach there's a big hole in my (relatively) new 5.8. ARSE ARSE ARSE.

But the Lord He moves in mysterious ways. The sail trashing was quite possibly a blessing as I was forced to change down to the waveboard/5.2 combo and the result was (to date) my best wavesailing session....ever. Wind direction a dreamy cross to cross-off. Strength = perfectly powered planing off the beach on many of the runs. Swell the perfect size - still big and chunky but no probs at all getting out back. Loads of speed to hack upwind gybe and look for the swell lines of which there were plenty. One of those sessions where everything went right - whether through luck or judgement dunno but more often than not I seemed to be in the right place at the right time. DTL heaven. Full power turn after turn, absolutely loving the new waveboard, and (I think...) I even scored my first ever aerial oh yes. It took me a few rides to remember that I wasn't sailing cross-on shingly rubbish and therefore no contorted clew-first shenanigans were required. Once I'd realised this I really started to go for it - long long drawn out bottom turns or really tight and snappy anything was possible and sooo easy to keep up speed all the way down the line. My lasting memory of the day was a wave where a bottom turn well out into the flats at full speed was required to get around an inconveniently positioned surfer ;-). She looked me straight in the eye with an expression of shock/fear/awe/respect (insert further ego-building bullshit as required) as I sped past her with the adrenaline pumping, then to my surprise realising I still had masses of power I bottom turned to smack the lip and then see that the wave was still long and clean oooohhhh baby. Oh I f***in' love wavesailing. :->>>

The session was curtailed by the expected very sudden wind drop and veer to onshore - again my luck was in as I was close to the beach at the time. After 5 hours on/off the water and lots of trips up and down the goat track I was absolutely shattered but a cornish pasty refuel sorted me out for the drive home in a very respectably quick 5 hours. 2 surf and 2 windsurfing sessions - a great trip. Every time I sail in Cornwall I am reminded why I do this sport and it smacks me in the face how relatively sh*t windsurfing on the south coast is. I am seriously considering moving down there now for a year or two.
